Rough Boys Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 - I watched Armageddon tonight, the movie with Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, et al, about a crew of oil-drilling roughnecks saving the human species from extinction. According to my father, who was an oilman to the bone and a wildcatter at heart, the movie is "complete and utter bullshit." But he loved it. I fell to watching this overlong and emotionally cheesy movie only because the Cincinnati/Atlanta game had become less than compelling (despite the devastatingly fabulous presence of Michael Vick, the QB for Atlanta, who is just as cute as he can be, and great fun to watch). And although the movie was total escapist fare (visually pretty, but with as much depth as a potato pancake), it reminded me of two axiomatic aphorisms: Americans believe they can do anything. And if they can do it, they should do it. And: Men give their best love to other men. (Atlanta won, 30-3.) last eleven:
